The post Only One U.S. President Served More Than Two Terms & Here’s Who! appeared first on History Chronicle.
]]>Franklin D. Roosevelt remains the longest-serving U.S. president, and the only one to stay in the White House for more than two terms. The 32nd president of the United States stayed in office from 1933 until his death in 1945, and several factors contributed to his long reign.
Roosevelt spent his initial two terms in office combating the Great Depression, and the surveys often rank him among the top three presidents for leading the country out of this crisis. He shifted focus to America’s involvement in World War II during his third and fourth term, but he never managed to see it through after passing away in April 1945, just a few months before the war came to a close.
Roosevelt’s record will most likely never be broken, thanks to the Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution. It was ratified in 1951 and prohibits anyone who has been elected president twice from being elected again.

]]>Even though this painting is widely known as “The Kiss”, this isn’t its real name. It was first exhibited in 1908 in Vienna in the Kunstschau under the title “Liebespaar”, which can be translated as “The Lovers”.
“The Kiss” is often mentioned as the final painting of Klimt’s Golden Period, which saw the iconic artist incorporate gold leaves into his works.
Even though it’s usually described as an Art Nouveau painting, “The Kiss” mixes many different artistic styles, and it’s been impacted by Byzantine artworks, Japanese prints, and the Arts and Crafts movement.
Klimt never revealed if the lovers in the paintings are real people, but it’s been speculated that “The Kiss” is actually a self-portrait that depicts the artist himself and his muse Emilie Flöge.
“The Kiss” set a new record for the highest price paid for a painting in Austria after the Belvedere Museum paid 25,000 crowns to make it a part of its collection. You can still see it in person at this opulent palace in Vienna over a century later.

]]>The post Why is Christmas Celebrated on December 25? appeared first on History Chronicle.
]]>Contrary to popular belief, Jesus wasn’t born on December 25, and it’s impossible to pinpoint his real birthday. Most historians estimate that he was born between 6 and 4 B.C. because the Biblical story of King Herod the Great’s reign coincides with the birth of Christ. Astronomers have another theory, suggesting he was either born in the fall of 7 B.C. or the summer of 2 B.C.
This brings us back to December 25 and how this date became Jesus’ birthday in the eyes of many Christians around the world. The first documentary sign of the Christmas celebration on December 25 took place in Rome in 336, under the rule of Constantine the Great, who converted to Christianity in 312.
December 25 was fixed as the date for Christmas during the early fourth century, which was the date of the winter solstice ancient Roman calendar. Some historians believe that Constantine wanted to celebrate Jesus’s birth near significant dates for pagan traditions, such as Saturnalia and Sol Invictus, in an attempt to weaken their significance.
Many centuries later, December 25 is celebrated as the birth of Christ by the majority of Western Christians, but not in the entire world. The majority of Eastern Christian Churches commemorate Christmas on January 7, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar.

]]>Marie Curie became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in 1903 when she became a laureate in physics alongside her husband Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel, “in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered”. The committee initially only intended to reward the two male scientists, but Pierre Curie was informed and filed a complaint.
Curie received her second Nobel Prize in the field of chemistry in 1911, becoming the first person and the only woman to win it multiple times. Her second win was overshadowed by her affair with physicist Paul Langevin, which was exploited by her academic opponents.
Even though Curie’s husband passed away years earlier and Langevin was estranged from his wife, their relationship ruffled some feathers. She was asked not to attend, but refused, saying “there is no relation between her scientific work and the facts of her private life”.
Winning Nobel Prizes was quite a family affair for the Curies. In addition to Marie and Pierre Curie, their daughter Irène Joliot-Curie was also a Nobel laureate in chemistry, for her discovery of induced radioactivity alongside her husband Frédéric Joliot-Curie. The Curies became the family with the most Nobel laureates to date, while Marie and Irène remain the only mother-daughter pair to have won Nobel Prizes.

]]>According to Forbes, Swift officially became a billionaire in October 2023, thanks to the earnings from her record-breaking The Eras Tour and the value of her music catalog. She became the first musician to reach billionaire status primarily based on earnings from her music and performances, without relying on other business endeavors.
A year later, Swift’s fortune reached a $1.6 billion valuation, helping her surpass Rihanna as the richest female musician of all time. Unlike Swift, the R&B superstar didn’t build her empire with music alone, and she mostly owes her fortune to her cosmetics line Fenty Beauty and her lingerie brand Savage X Fenty.
As for Swift, her fortune includes nearly $600 million from royalties and touring, a music catalog worth an estimated $600 million, and around $125 million in real estate. Her ongoing The Eras Tour previously made history as the first tour to collect $1 billion in revenue and reportedly became the first to ever gross $2 billion worldwide. It inspired the highest-grossing concert film of all time, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which earned $267.1 million worldwide, with a high percentage of earnings going to Swift.

“The last time I saw this jersey was probably the time that I shot it in the locker room at St. Vincent-St. Mary… You look back and you don’t realize, it was a real turning point. It’s surreal. What’s f—ed up is I didn’t ask to take the jersey home after the shoot,” LeBrecht told the auction house Julien’s.
