With 367 Grand Slam wins under her belt, Williams holds the record for most Grand Slam victories by a female player in the Open Era.
By the time they reach 30, most tennis players have already left their best days behind them – but not Williams. She won 10 Grand Slam titles since turning 30, the most for any woman in the Open Era.
Serena was 35 years, four months, and two days old when she defeated her sister Venus to win the Australian Open crown in 2017, becoming the oldest women’s singles player to win a Grand Slam in the Open Era.
Williams excelled as both the singles and doubles player alongside her sister Venus, and she’s the only player to achieve the Career Golden Slam in both singles and doubles.

]]>The auction took place at Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire last week, and featured many impressive pieces of Titanic memorabilia. The case of the violin belonging to the bandleader Wallace Hartley and a pocketbook detailing the Titanic’s voyages also fetched impressive prices, but none of them compares to Astor’s watch.
Astor went down with the ship at the age of 47, after putting his wife Madeleine on a lifeboat. He was a successful businessman and one of the richest passengers aboard the RMS Titanic, with a net worth of roughly $87 million, equivalent to $2.75 billion today.
The golden watch with his initials was eventually recovered from his body and was expected to sell for about $189,000 at auction. It exceeded everyone’s expectations and became one of the highest-selling items from Titanic at $1.5 million.
According to the auctioneer Andrew Aldridge, the prices fetched at this sale were absolutely incredible cause “they reflect not only the importance of the artifacts themselves and their rarity but they also show the enduring appeal and fascination with the Titanic story.”

]]>Discovered on the island of Milos, this Parian marble statue depicts the Greek goddess of love, so it’s also known by the nickname Aphrodite de Milos. There’s a lot of mystery surrounding its original creator, but it’s widely believed it was sculpted by Alexandros of Antioch between 150 and 125 BC.
Just like Venus de Milo, this headless statue now resides in Louvre Museum, but how did it end up there? Charles Champoiseau discovered this statue dedicated to the goddess Niké on the island of Samothrace and decided to send it to Louvre. He later tried to find its missing arms and head, but with no success.
This marble sculpture was created to adorn the walls of Parthenon’s naos in Athens, but it’s now located in the British Museum in London. The meaning behind this sculpture remains unsolved to this day, and there are many different interoperations surrounding it, but it’s widely believed that it represents the Panathenaic procession.

]]>All Quiet on the Western Front is an adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s seminal novel of the same name, originally published in 1929. It’s told from the vantage point of the fictional German soldier Paul Bäumer, and we get to experience the extreme physical and mental trauma that the soldiers witnessed during the war through his eyes.
Since Bäumer didn’t really exist, it would be a mistake to describe All Quiet on the Western Front as a true story, but many of the events we get to see on screen are rooted in reality. The novel’s writer Remarque was a World War I veteran, and he drew inspiration for this book from his experiences in the Imperial German Army.
Some of the characters in All Quiet truly existed, including German politician Matthias Erzberger and French general Ferdinand Foch, who were entrusted to sign the armistice between Germany and the Allied Powers. This storyline wasn’t present in the book, and this is one of the most significant differences between the two.
Despite being met with generally positive reviews, Netflix’s adaptation drew criticism for certain historical inaccuracies in terms of fighting scenes, including the inaccurate portrayal of certain weapons such as flamethrowers and barbed wire installations.

]]>Mr. Darcy’s wet shirt was sold at an auction hosted by Kerry Taylor Auctions in London on Tuesday, which included over 60 costumes from John Bright’s costume house Cosprop. The list of costumes sold at the auction also included Madonna’s Christian Dior ball gown from Evita ($50,000), Johnny Depp’s Ichabod Crane costume from Sleepy Hollow ($30,000), and Drew Barrymore’s dreamy dress Ever After: A Cinderella Story ($20,000).
Firth’s Mr. Darcy shirt was definitely the most significant piece of TV history sold at this auction, and the backstory behind it is quite interesting. It was featured in the iconic scene that shows Mr. Darcy having an impromptu swim in a lake before running into his Elizabeth Bennet, and it wasn’t originally featured in Jane Austen’s novel.
Collin Firth recalled the iconic moment on the auctioneer’s website and explained how the idea of the “wet shirt” was born.
“Mr. Darcy’s ‘wet shirt moment’ was never scripted. It came about in discussions between myself and the late Christopher Prins who was then head of menswear at Cosprop. In the scene Mr. Darcy is spied emerging from a lake having taken a cooling swim on a hot summer’s day,” recalled Firth.

Harrison Butker also had a reason to celebrate, after booting a 57-yard field goal to set the record for the longest field goal in a Super Bowl, breaking the new record set by Jake Moody in the same game.
