The Italians successfully defended their crown in 1938, however, they had to wait until 1982 to get their hands on the trophy once again. In 2006, Italy won their fourth World Cup, defeating France in a nail-biting penalty shootout.
Winning their first World Cup in 1954 as West Germany, the Bavarians won again in 1974 and 1990. In 2014, they won the tournament for the first time as a united Germany, scoring late in extra time to beat Argentina 1-0 in the final.
Brazil remains the greatest footballing nation on earth, with five World Cup trophies to their name. With their most recent victory coming in 2002, it’s been a while since the Seleção has been bathed in glory, however, the heroics of Pele in the victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970 will forever be cherished.

]]>Winning Streak: 24 Games
The Golden State Warriors entered the 2015-16 NBA season after winning the NBA championship the season before and just continued with their winning ways. The Warriors ended up winning the first 24 games of the season, which was the best start in NBA history, before losing to the Milwaukee Bucks on December 12, 2015. Golden State ended the season with an all-time best 73-9 record and advanced to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Winning Streak: 27 Games
Fresh from their 2012 NBA Finals win, the Miami Heat were once again the best team in the NBA in the 2012–13 season, fronted by stars LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh. After a 100–85 win over the Toronto Raptors on February 3, 2013, the Heat would go on to win another 26 consecutive games before their winning streak ended with a 97–101 loss to the Chicago Bulls on March 27, 2013. The Heat would go on to win their second straight NBA title that season.
Winning Streak: 33 Games
The 1971–72 season was a special one for the Los Angeles Lakers for multiple reasons. The first reason was that they managed to win 33 games between November 5, 1971, and January 9, 1972, setting a record for the longest winning streak in NBA history that remains untouched to date. The second one was that the Lakers ended the season by winning an NBA championship, which was their first since the franchise relocated from Minneapolis to Los Angeles.

Ruth had 11 seasons with 40 or more homers, an achievement that is yet to be challenged. The second place on the list is reserved for Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Harmon Killebrew, and Hank Aaron, who each have eight such seasons.
Slugging percentage is used to determine the productivity of a hitter during his plate appearances. The numbers say that there was not a more productive hitter than Babe Ruth in the history of the game, and probably there won’t be. The next best is Ted Williams with .6338, while the active player closest to Ruth is Aaron Judge with .5832.
Babe Ruth finished his career with 2,174 runs scored, placing him fourth on the all-time list. However, he had six seasons with 150 or more runs, an achievement that will hardly ever be matched. Billy Hamilton is second on the list with four such seasons, and no active player has surpassed the 150-mark run even once.

Still, people in England insisted that Senna would not be able to become a driver if he didn’t have a wife to support him. He thus decided to marry his childhood sweetheart, Lilian de Vasconcelos Souza.
Brazilian Formula 1 champion Nelson Piquet was a role model to Senna. Upon meeting him, however, Senna was disappointed after his hero snubbed him. The pair became rivals, with Piquet even launching a smear campaign against Senna. Still, Senna wasn’t about to take this lying down, instead choosing to respond via his performances on the track.
At 28 years old, Senna was a member of the McLaren driving team. There, he was partnered with world champion Frenchman Alain Prost. ]]>Part of Pele’s greatness is that he scored goals at will. He is officially recognized by Guinness World Records for scoring 1,279 goals in 1,363 games. It is important to note that this includes goals scored in friendly and exhibition matches, which are not counted by the soccer governing body, FIFA. Pele himself claimed that his goal tally is bigger and stands at 1,283 goals.
Pele is the only player in the history of soccer with three World Cup trophies on his resume. He won his first World Cup with Brazil’s national team in 1958 as a 17-year-old and went on to repeat the feat in 1962 and 1970. Not a single active player has more than one, and no player born after 1976 has two.
Pele is also a record holder for most hat-tricks—scoring three goals in a single game—with 92. This achievement of his is officially recognized by FIFA because all of the 92 hat-tricks came in official club and international matches. His closest challengers, Cristiano Ronaldo with 65 and Lionel Messi with 57, are still active but approaching the end of their respective careers and are unlikely to even come close to Pele.

]]>The marathon at the 1904 Summer Olympics was scheduled to take part at the hottest time of the day, with most of the route involving country roads full of dust. Thirty-two athletes started the race, with a large number of them having no previous marathon experience. This included Andarín Carvajal, a former mailman from Cuba, and several members of the Tsuana tribe from South Africa, who were there for the World’s Fair.
Upon the start of the race, many contestants found the marathon to be extremely difficult. Besides hot and humid weather and dust, the runners also only had two water stops for the entire race. One member of the Greek team collapsed due to dust after a couple of miles, while runners from the Tsuana tribe were chased from the correct route by a pack of wild dogs.
Eventually, American Frederick Lorz crossed the finishing line first but was soon disqualified. It was discovered that Lorz actually gave up after nine miles, hitched a ride to the stadium in a car that broke down, and eventually jogged the remaining distance.
Thomas Hicks, who came in second, was awarded the golden medal, but his win was also controversial. Ten miles before the finish, he was administered strychnine, a performance-enhancing chemical, in the mix of eggs and brandy by his trainers. Hicks barely arrived at the finishing line and experienced hallucinations.
Carvajal had a wild race himself, eating a couple of rotten apples that caused him cramps. He decided to take a nap and still finished the race, coming in at fourth place.
