]]>Bryant wore the iconic yellow jersey with the No. 8 between his first media day and regular season debut, along with four other games during his rookie season in 1996-97. It sold for $7 million almost three decades later, surpassing the $5.85 million paid for Bryant’s signed jersey from the 2007-08 season as the most expensive piece of Bryant memorabilia.
Bryant’s debut jersey is also the fourth most expensive game-worn sports jersey in history. The record is still held by Babe Ruth’s “called shot” jersey ($24 million), while Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance” jersey ($10.1 million) and Diego Maradona’s 1986 FIFA World Cup jersey ($9.3 million) made it to the top three.
Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles Brahm Wachter discussed the historic sale with ESPN and explained why this jersey represents a bridge between the raw potential of a teenage prodigy and the refined greatness that would follow.
“Debut games are truly one-of-a-kind moments in an athlete’s career. They mark the nascency of an extraordinary journey, and for iconic athletes like Kobe Bryant, these milestones hold even more significance as they represent a singular moment in time that can never be replicated,” said Wachter.

]]>Argentine soccer icon Lionel Messi holds the record for most Ballon d’Ors won by a single player with eight, and this is not his only notable achievement. He’s also the only player to win the award with three different teams (Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Miami), in addition to being the only one to win it while playing outside of Europe.
The record for most Ballon d’Or nominations is held by the Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 18 nominations between 2007 and 2019. He once shared the record for most Ballon d’Or wins with Messi, after winning his fifth trophy in 2017, but their tie was eventually broken two years later.
Thanks to Lionel Messi, Argentina holds the record for most Ballon d’Ors won by a single nation with eight, but this record could soon be broken. Dutch, German, Portuguese, and French players have won the second most Ballons d’Or with seven each.
When it comes to awards won by clubs, players from Real Madrid and Barcelona are tied with 12 awards each. Italian clubs Juventus and Milan share the third spot with eight trophies each.

]]>A rite of passage, the Heraia race was a girl’s introduction into adulthood. During the race, participants would leave their childhoods behind, becoming young women who were fit for marriage. Nancy Serwint, a professor of ancient art and archaeology at Arizona State University explained that “For unmarried girls, the Heraia may have been “a social introduction into adult society.”
Held on a shortened version of the men’s Olympic track, the Heraia race was highly reminiscent of the Olympic races in many respects. The winners would receive olive-leafed crowns and even a portion of a cow sacrificed to Hera. Ultimately, the aim of this ancient race was for young girls, who were believed to be teenagers, to show their suitability for marriage to potential husbands.
Intriguingly, there is little evidence remaining that serves as proof of this ancient ritual. Ultimately, it was statues of female athletes wearing the specific costume that Heraia runners were believed to have worn.

“The last time I saw this jersey was probably the time that I shot it in the locker room at St. Vincent-St. Mary… You look back and you don’t realize, it was a real turning point. It’s surreal. What’s f—ed up is I didn’t ask to take the jersey home after the shoot,” LeBrecht told the auction house Julien’s.
The jersey wound up on the cover of Sports Illustrated which described James as “The Chosen One.” It previously fetched $512,200 at Julien’s auction in 2021, and it’s expected to sell in the range between $1 million and $2 million when it goes up for auction in Hong Kong later this month.

]]>At the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, women were prohibited from participating. This changed four years later when women participated in a variety of events, ranging from tennis and golf to equestrianism and croquet. At the same time, a golf tournament in the French town of Compiègne was getting underway. The tournament consisted of five local French women and five American ladies who were studying or vacationing in France, among them being Abbott.
At the end of the nine-hole tournament, the 22-year-old carded a score of 47, just two shots clear of the second-placed Polly Whittier hailing from Boston. Upon winning the tournament, Abbott received an old Saxon porcelain bowl mounted in chiseled gold. While a fine award, this was no gold medal.
It would take another four years for medals to be awarded at the Olympic Games. Without the inclusion of medals and a winner’s podium, there was no indication that the golf tournament that Abbott won was actually part of the Olympic Games schedule. Also, none of the participants were made aware that this was the case.
For the remainder of her life, Abbott never knew that she participated in the Olympics. It was only in 1973 that the truth was uncovered. When visiting the U.S. Olympic Committee headquarters in New York City, Paula Wench came across a plaque listing Abbott as the winner of the 1900 Olympic golfing tournament with a government report acknowledging this. Thus, Abbott had become the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal without even knowing it.
